What SIM Only Plans Are And How You Can Gain Save With Them

By Tara Parker

The term SIM Only Plans can mean a couple of different things. In some SIM only plan, you have to sign the conventional two-year contract, but you don't get a phone, only a SIM card. You have to supply your own phone. You forgo the free or reduced-cost phone. Others are prepaid, or pay-as-you go. You choose which suits you best.

The contract plan with no phone is desirable for a number of reasons. The main reason is that the cost is usually lower. That is not always the case, though, so check carefully. If a person has their own phone that they prefer using, they might not want a new one. Also, not every time is the phone one a person wants. If they get a deal without the phone, they can choose their own.

Plans without a contract attached are sometimes best, or may be all you can afford. For example, if a person has poor or no credit, they may not can get a contract without a huge deposit. In that case, pay-as-you-go is the best option. Also, if you just need the phone service for a short period of time, such as when travelling out of the country, you can use this option to avoid high roaming charges. You can put the new card into your old phone just for the amount of time when you need it.

You can choose the features you want with either plan. These features range from full service that you would get with any plan, including text, data, internet, and calling minutes. You can get them individually, or get a combination of any of these. Some charge by the minute or megabytes of data usage, and some offer unlimited usage with the package bought.

There may be a question of why use the prepaid or SIM only if the credit is good. One reason is the fact that conditions in life might change in the future, making it undesirable to get locked into a contract agreement. Also, costs can vary with overages, etc. With prepaid plans, you know exactly how much you are paying. There will be no surprises at the end of a month with overages, taxes, etc.

Some people, for a variety of reasons, one being not wanting to lose or leave their phone somewhere away from home, will use the prepaid arrangement when travelling, either on a business or personal trip. They can be in contact with home and family, but don't have to worry about leaving the phone in the airport or hotel room. Also, they are able to limit their contact to just family and work, or whomever they wish, without having to worry about unnecessary distractions.

With a plan such as this, you can control how much either you or your family uses. It is a means of control where there is a possibility of no self-control. It is ideal for a college student who needs to be able to call home, but may not handle the amount of usage. The amount of usage is automatically controlled by the amount of usage paid for.

The different options offered with the SIM Only Plans means everyone can have what they want. If these features are something you could use you should look into it further. Make sure you are aware of features and what each costs, so you can compare. Choose the plan and options that give you the service you need while keeping costs to a minimum.
