iPhone 5: The Good, The Bad & The Ugly

Amid much speculation and anticipation, iPhone's latest avatar, the iPhone 5, was launched last month. Most of what was announced didn't come as a surprise though because just about everything was already leaked, and this was one of the reasons why this launch wasn't as exciting to the tech community as the usual Apple launches.

Despite the fact that the launch was touted as underwhelming by most, it has been long enough for people to form more informed opinions. And what has happened? Many people have come to like the phone after using the phone on a regular basis. What seemed like a dud initially has become the best phone Apple has ever created. People have started appreciating the craftsmanship, the classic design of the phone. When everyone thought it was near impossible to outdo the iPhone 4's design, Apple did exactly that. No one has put up a scathing review; indeed the phone stacks up well against the competition.

Is there nothing bad about the phone? No. The iOS hasn't caught up to the competition. Android has made some impressive leaps and is now as powerful, if not more, as the iOS. The phones have started getting increasingly better hardware and it defies sense as to why the iOS won't make full use of it. With new versions launched annually, there is little to worry. You can expect a lot of improvements when the next iteration launches the next year.

You would be hard pressed to find a better phone if we are talking about the build quality. The screen size has been increased and that was coming with a number of phones boasting of much bigger screen sizes. There are benefits, too, as the larger screen size allows you to do more. The market has evolved, obviously, and I can see where a 4'' phone wins against the competition right now. It was a necessary move for Apple and over the next year, they will fine-tune the OS to make better use of the screen size.

It doesn't end there though; there are other problems. Apple changed their Maps to something they call the best Maps application ever. If only. It's a disaster in it's current version. It's a known fact that maps require a lot of accurate data. Google had built up a lot over the last eight years or so. The new one does not and as far as the experience is concerned, it brings it a notch down.

The important thing here is that most of the concerns are related to the software, not the hardware. The hardware has improved by leaps and bounds; it's faster, it's more powerful and there's more screen size to boot. The software, unfortunately, isn't very capable in it's current version. It won't stay like this forever though. The next iterations will take better advantage of the screen size and for this reason, I'd say that purchasing the iPhone 5 is completely worth it. It's the best phone you'd ever hold in your hands and you won't regret the purchase.
